I have never used them but bought them for my children (3 and 6 years old). They had no instructions so I sprinkled just enough to moderately cover the bottom of the Tupperware container and filled it about 1/3 full with water. Then I realized it would take some time for them to fill up completely. After about 2 hours they looked completely full and had soaked up almost all of the water. And my kids love to play with it! Even though I told my kids NOT to eat them, I caught my 3 year old putting something in his mouth so he can't play with them anymore. He did NOT eat them, he spat them out, but make sure you enter the correct age. My daughter loves playing with it and it kept her entertained for a while. I even think they're fun to play with. I recommend them for sensory play, but only for children who are listening and are of an age to follow directions and not put them in their mouths. They're not dirty, slimy, and when you're done you can plant plants to water them or throw them away. And this double pack (small and large) will stay with us for a long time!
