Pros: AM reception

This review is primarily for AM, I bought the radio for outdoor use and listened to ball games, conversation and news: Good: AM reception, the best of any radio. I removed the cover to look at the ferrite rod antenna, it's 4.75 inches long and very thick. The bad: AM, this radio has a constant hum on many channels, remember when the test for 911 hits the network it starts with a high pitched tone, that's what the hum sounds like, but at a much lower level. I use this radio outdoors, in a kayak, in the middle of a lake. No other electronic devices cause interference. , this background sound is caused by the radio. I live in Southwest Michigan and all of my stations come from Chicago, Milwaukee, Southwest Michigan and Northern Indiana. Below is a list of the stations I get during the day: Bad news for White Sox fans, 720 has the loudest hum and 820 is just as bad, very annoying to listen to these stations. The following stations also have hum, but at a lower level: 560 , and sorry Brewers 620 fans, These stations are free of background tones: Good news Tiger fans! 590 Kzoo and 1400 St. Joe are free of tones. Good news for Cub fans. 670 Chicago is clean also these channels are free from background tones: 780, 890, 910, 960, 1000, 1060, 1190, 1290, 1340 Ball is ok but if you listen to any AM music stations you will be disappointed. For those familiar with bandwidth settings, this radio tuned to 2 FM works well, sound on FM is much wider and higher pitched than AM, sounds good for light background music. I would give this radio four stars if all AM channels were free from that annoying background noise.
