Review on Angel POS 1006017 17" Touchscreen Monitor with 1280x1024 Resolution by Tom Freeman

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Legacy VGA input, can't replace VGA/USB cable, whole monitor broke within a month.

I bought this to run a DMX show on an Intel NUC with Ubuntu. The display worked out of the box on Linux and was of usable quality. The touchscreen "worked" but was always upside down and upside down. This is an issue with me and Linux, not the monitor, and should not be addressed in this review (FYI only). The base is very strong, it sits flat on the table and you can screw the computer to the back! And it's also a "cheap" monitor, what can go wrong! The first problem with this monitor is that it is only VGA. If you have legacy stuff this will work fine. But today's smaller computers often don't have VGA anymore, so you might be able to invest $50 in this monitor just to be able to adapt it to Displayport or HDMI. Be prepared to lug those adapters and cables around and deal with any problems they have. The second problem is that the video input and USB cables are not interchangeable. These are pigtails that are glued to the monitor. If something happens to them, they will take out the soldering iron and rather throw away the entire monitor. The third and final problem, the monitor died after a month! This monitor sat in my shop for weeks where it was used for show programming. He went to the exhibition and worked once, then I used it again in the store. Then he was taken to the second show, which didn't happen because it was canceled (people always take a deposit). Installed in store but broken! I don't tour with Metallica, I've used the original packaging to transport it to gigs twice. What's broken is that the display doesn't have "V-Hold" like we said in the CRT days. It just rolls awkwardly. Even the monitor menus are unreadable and it is disconnected from the computer/adapters. Change the video cable you say? Read above, it's impossible! A month and a half ago this monitor became garbage. I hate giving it a star because the picture was ok, it's a sturdy little thing, it's inexpensive, it has the correct VESA to install a terminal, and it comes with everything that goes with it. But that means nothing if it's broken and I can't get it back. I wanted it to work, I wanted to buy another. But by no means do I avoid this monitor and all its clones.

Pros
  • The base/stand could be more stable. The screen can withstand the abuse of heavy use
Cons
  • The base is not stable. The screen is not very responsive. More of a punch screen than a touch screen.
