Review on Compact Carbide Sharpener for ETE Combat by Jarrett Love

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Nice little portable sharpener, works surprisingly well for such a small unit

This is a neat looking sharpener made from a solid block of aluminum except for the carbide sharpening blades (which are interchangeable). but you would probably just buy another whole sharpener). It appears to be well made and beautifully designed; It has a hole to hang it on a strap, keychain, etc. It also has rubber grips to keep it stable while sharpening. The size of this sharpener is 3 inch x 1 inch x 0.25 inch. It has a limited lifetime warranty, but carbide blades are not covered by the warranty. I used it on a white-handled paring knife (a high-carbon blade made in Brazil) that I use to chop romaine for lunch at work. It's a cheap knife, but the sharpener made it sharp. I also have an inexpensive folding box opener at work and this sharpener sharpened it well too. I don't think I'll try this sharpener on my $200 SpyderCo knife as it could damage the blade. I'm not sure and I'd rather not screw it up. I will definitely keep this sharpener in my desk to sharpen both of these less expensive knives. This sharpener's size and quality also comes in handy when you're on the go. When you open crates in the warehouse every day, it fits perfectly in your pocket to sharpen knives in no time. The documentation was a little confusing as it shows three different images under the instructions. I googled and ETE sells three different models of portable sharpeners. The three illustrations show how to sharpen with each model. DOH. To use this, basically hold the blade perpendicular to the sharpener, apply some pressure and pull it back through the carbide blades. All in all, this is a good little portable sharpener. Half-rhetorical question: why is the knife in the singular and the knives in the plural? English is weird. (And yes, it's my native language.) Let Revane donate to your favorite charity!
