A click with the ice pick does the job very well. Many people do not know how to properly use an ice ax. DO NOT pierce the ice with a pickaxe. Instead, just place the tip of the pick on the ice and then use your other hand to press the top of the pick handle once. The ice will break clean and neat, and you won't pierce anything else (like the countertop) in the process.
