Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great HD camcorder for the price

Pros: - Excellent video quality - Reliable image stabilization - Excellent zoom - 40X+ - Fast and stable focusing Cons (small): - No optical viewfinder (but not nearly as price) there is one) - No headphone jack - No remote control. Overall Rating: Great camcorder for the price - great video quality. I've been using this camcorder for about a month and I love everything about it. The video quality is excellent. Especially in sunlight you really get that pseudo 3D/image window effect. The autofocus is very fast and follows the action well. I previously bought the Sanyo VPC-FH1A and had terrible problems with it after football matches - it just lost focus and took 3-5 seconds to come back - no such problems with the SD90, even at very high zoom levels. Speaking of zoom levels, the SD90 has 40x "smart" optical zoom, which means you get 40x zoom with no loss of resolution because the sensor is higher resolution than the maximum video resolution of 1920x1080. The zoom is sharp and the hybrid optical image stabilization makes video very stable even at this high magnification. This is the first camcorder I've used where the image stabilization really blew me away. This spring I shot some racing videos while standing in the stands in gusty 30+ mph winds, zooming in on individual racers from around the stadium and showing _very_ minor_ camera shake (now the choppy panning is still my fault :-) . The camera is small - almost too small for my hands - but it feels solid and feels good in the hand, although the wrist strap is quite narrow and doesn't feel particularly comfortable. Buttons are well-placed - since I didn't have to change settings often in Smart Auto mode, the only buttons I really had to deal with were the start/stop button and the zoom lever. and they are both where they should be. One thing I don't particularly like is the fact that many of the controls are on the touchscreen - and I'm the kind of person who doesn't like my screen getting smudged - but that's not the main issue. I've posted a 1080p sport/fight video here with HDC-SD90 in various lighting conditions (does Revain allow you to post video links?): on an entry-level iMac. Edit: Looks like Revain won't let me post video links. Search "Panasonic HDC-SD90 1080p Action Sports" on YouTube.
