Rated one star because yes, the volume control is very disappointing. Bought for mom. She wants to watch TV without disturbing others in the house. In order to get sound through the headphones, the independent volume controls for the left and right channels have to be at maximum levels, which makes them pointless (I don't have hearing problems, and even for me they have to be at maximum levels). The TV volume has to be very high, at least half - definitely an unacceptable volume level without headphones. I've tried different options for sound output on my mother's TV, nothing works better. When you hear it, it's clear, crisp sound. At least one reviewer claims that "reviews that complain about low volume obviously plug into the line out jack, and of course that doesn't work." What the hell does that mean? Why should I connect it? From what I understand (as do other people) you can just plug it into the headphone jack. Why pay so much for headphones when you also have to buy an adapter?
