Poor quality / Danger to fish / Strong chemical smell

It may have been a faulty product that did not affect the entire line but the heater I received formed a film after a few days. I noticed my betta was starting to misbehave so I took out the heater to inspect them. After I took it off, a strong chemical smell came from the heater. I threw the heater in the bin and immediately gutted my tank to save my betta. I'm still not sure if he will recover. Very disappointing as Aqueon is considered a good reliable brand. I would highly doubt purchasing future products from this company.
