Review on Chase Harper USA 4502 RipStream by Fredrick Edwards

Revainrating 4 out of 5

All in all a well thought out bag.

I bought 4 identical bags and chose this one. I will briefly summarize the pros and cons of the 4 I considered. What I was looking for in a tail bag: - Approximately 20L capacity - Easy access - this meant no roll-top pockets and sacrificing water resistance. I installed them on an Altrider rack that I installed on my Tiger XRX. It basically offers a wider and longer installation platform with many mounting options. Bags: Givi UT807BP Pros: beautiful appearance; semi-solid so it keeps its shape well; internal roll top which is optional and waterproof. Disadvantages: expensive; doesn't stretch much, one large compartment and only 2 small flat pockets so not very versatile. The biggest problem was the installation. The straps are designed to attach around different parts of the bike. The problem is that each loop attaches to the body at 2 points - one at the bottom and one at the top of the body. The high attachment point allows for too much movement of the IMO bag. Also, the plastic sponges looked very flimsy and I wasn't sure if they would last long - I was expecting better quality given the price. Chase Harper 4200 Hideaway Tail Trunk Pro: Good quality material; Side and back pockets for more versatility; Bungee cord on top. Cons: Doesn't hold its shape at all unless full. I really hated the binding system. These are 2 bungee cords that attach to the bottom of the bag and pull out to attach to 4 different points on the bike. I pulled them on as tight as I could and couldn't secure my back securely enough. It didn't help that the cords weren't attached to the corners of the bag, but from the edges down. Ogio Stealth Black Duffel Tail Bag Pro: Back, side and top pockets for good versatility; Expansion produces a significant increase in performance; built-in rain cover. Cons: Material feels a bit cheap compared to Chase Harper; I didn't like the non-removable pad on the bottom - it seems useless; The attachment points are in convenient places, but the buckles are attached to the bag at a certain angle, which limits the options for attaching it to the bike. The buckles also looked pretty flimsy. The Chase Harper 4205 Ripstream Tail Trunk is the bag I ended up choosing. Pros: good quality material; Back, side, top and inner pockets for more versatility; bungee cord on top; hard padding on the sides keeps its shape well; Each of the side pockets will hold a 1 liter fuel bottle (they will not fit in the Ogio). Cons: does not stretch; It's quite wide, and even with my wide rack, it gets a bit compressed by its left-to-right bracing. Again, I hated the bungee attachment system, but I liked the bag so much I used an alternate method. The bag has 4 loops on the 4 bottom corners. I threaded a camlock strap through each pair of sides and looped the webbing around the carrier and bike frame to secure it very securely. It doesn't move when I ride, it has plenty of room and great pockets for organization. It's easy to hit when I need to stop quickly on the road. I am very happy with this bag and think it will last a long time.
