Worth the money when new

I bought this camera at a new lower price ($150 less). For the price, this camera is definitely worth the money. Photographically, the camera is excellent. 8-megapixel photos that look great, great flexibility for different scenes, and fairly fast shutter speeds are the highlights. The camera has some trouble focusing in the dark, especially when you're zoomed in and the subject is too far away. The only real issue I had was setting up the Wi-Fi feature. I consider myself a fairly literate computer scientist, but this confused me for a while. The call to Nikon was pleasant but a waste of time. The biggest problem you will run into is if you have a firewall enabled in XP or XP Pro. You have to take a closer look, but on page 136 of the manual there is a little hint about the port settings when using a firewall (and who doesn't?). By the way, the Nikon representative didn't understand anything when I told him that he works with the firewall turned off, but not with the firewall turned on. He was basically saying he had no idea and firewalls weren't Nikon's specialty. In any case, you need to go to Security Settings, click Windows Firewall Settings, click Add Port, then add UDP port 5353 and click OK. Add another port, this time just select TCP port 15740 and click OK. It was VERY BADLY explained in the manual and I couldn't find anything on their website. While I was just shooting, the battery life was ok. Using the Wi-Fi function consumes battery power. I would recommend purchasing an extra battery (only $17) as a spare for longer trips. That should give you 300+ photos PROS - Great outdoor shots - Good indoor shots with flash - Wide range of shooting modes and camera controls - Easy to use as a point and shoot - Enough scope for really creative photography - Fairly fast shutter speed - Very detailed manual (except Wi -Fi setup) - Excellent image transmission over Wi-Fi (after setup) CONS - Difficult Wi-Fi setup - Difficult to focus in dark areas, difficult at times - Battery life could be better
