Good sound, great picture, software must work

For the money, this television is really hard to beat. What impressed me the most about this TV was the sound. According to Samsung, this TV has woofers designed to help with lower frequencies, which have long been a weak point of flat-screen TVs. Having owned the TV for a few days I can attest that it produces a sound I have never heard from a flat screen TV before. Don't expect it to rock your walls with heavy deep bass, but it's definitely an improvement over previous models. The lowest frequencies I hear from it are somewhere in the 60-70Hz range. Picture quality is excellent. My impression is that it's improved a bit from last year's already excellent offerings, although I don't have the equipment to measure that objectively. The TV can produce vivid colours, gets very bright and offers great contrast and the settings allow you to tweak this to your liking. A certain color distortion when viewed from an angle is due to the technology, but even with a wide angle I wouldn't call it disturbing. The only thing that isn't great about the TV is the software. The YouTube app stops playing videos about once a day. A long press on the back button will exit it, after which it can be restarted. The app also displays ads, even if you're signed into an account with an ad-removal subscription. The TV occasionally restarts and shows ConTV, which often displays violence and can take up to a minute to go away. The software can also be slow and unresponsive at times, especially immediately after turning on the TV. Apps also take time to load. This is a case where the TV is new, which doesn't bode well for future performance when applications will no doubt be more demanding. Of course, you don't need to use the provided apps or the menu bar if you just want to watch TV normally, or if you're running your software on an external device plugged into one of the TV's ports. Software issues aside, this is a great cheap TV. I'm sure the best picture quality, more processing power and more HDMI ports might be available if you're willing to spend more, but for the money this TV could very well be the best. If you already have a newer model, should you upgrade? Compared to last year's RU8000, this TV definitely has better sound, I think the picture is a bit better, but you have fewer HDMI ports (3 instead of 4) and I feel the software runs less smoothly. All in all I would keep using the RU8000 unless you really need better sound. Compared to older or lower models that already have slower processors and fewer HDMI ports, an upgrade to the TU8000 is definitely worth it. four stars, keeping a fifth star for a future TV with a faster processor and at least 4 ports. Otherwise, this TV is great and I can recommend it without hesitation. An upgrade to TU8000 is definitely worth it.
