Review on Philips PET724 7 Inch Portable Player by Adam Johnson

We spent about 6 months deciding if using a portable player was enough to justify the purchase and if so which one we should buy. As a BitTorrent user, I already have a lot of DivX files. So when I saw a player with this kind of capability at this price point, I pulled the trigger. A very good decision. We have been actively using the player for about a month now and are very satisfied, often wondering why we waited so long to buy it. We got it before a long trip (7 hours one way) and it made the trip so much more comfortable for my 4 year old. He was actually looking forward to getting back in the car to see his shows! Using the free DivX player/recorder software for Windows, I was able to burn about 10 hours of children's shows onto a single DVD-R. The Philips portable played every DVD, DVD-R and DVD-RW we gave it without skipping or freezing. What can not be said about our full-fledged home player. It seems very sturdy and so far has held up well even in the hands of a fairly sturdy 4 year old. Battery life is very good, but I don't have details. At least 5+ hours which seems good to me. The included adapters allow you to use it with an outlet or cigarette lighter without a battery if you need to (much easier that way). The car adapter cable is long enough to reach from the dashboard to the back seat in a large car, but it probably won't make the third row in a minivan. The screen is small, especially when viewing content with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The 7-inch diagonal really only applies to 16:9 (widescreen) content. The built-in speakers sound good and are surprisingly loud. There are 2 headphone jacks, which is a standout feature as you don't have to use a splitter. With the included AV cable, you can connect it to the composite inputs on your TV or VCR for use with your home entertainment. Center.
