Review on FUKUMARU Floating Scratching Hanging Shelves by Katrina Brown

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Worst wall mount design ever made that didn't come with drywall components

The quality is good and if you can work around the wall mount issues it's excellent but this thing was on for three reasons most annoying when installing it: (1) The support beam between the L bracket and the actual shelf covers the top screw hole in each L bracket. Who came up with that anyway? To install it you will definitely need a very long shank screwdriver or a flexible drill bit holder to maneuver around the support beam, but in any case you are still at a very awkward angle that puts you at risk of the stripping. Screw because there is not enough space between the support beam and the top screw hole. I'm not sure if you can use a 90 degree drill holder as the heads of the ones I've seen are too wide to fit in the space between the screw hole and the support beam. (2) Kit comes with anchors for concrete and masonry walls, NOT drywall. Not only are most people likely to install this in drywall, but the photos/videos on the product page show drywall, which is misleading. I believe this was done because the torque of a 10 lb cat sitting on a 10 inch arm (the width of the product which is the length coming out of the wall) is quite significant and the type the drywall anchors you would have to use to be safe expensive so they just lowered the price and put plastic concrete anchors in. So it was an absolute pain. - TIP: If you plan to install this product in drywall, DO NOT buy the cheap drywall anchor kits that you can get at Target. They break easily and the expanders break. Do yourself a favor and buy £100 EZ Ancor instead. Philips self-drilling pan head drywall anchors with heavy duty screws. They are incredibly easy to install, reliable and strong enough. Don't fiddle with plastic expansion bolts (they aren't strong enough) or other lever and molybdenum screws (most aren't as strong or easy to install as those listed above). (3) Whoever designed it had nothing to do with it as this shelf is 15.7 inches long. If they had just made it to 16 inches, you could just screw the shelf onto the studs, which is the standard 16 inch spacing in the US. And no, before you think that's it. Being a Japanese company, the standard stud spacing in Japanese homes is about 18 inches. So the size puts you in an awkward position. Since I was already constructing, I didn't dare install all four screws into the drywall (although I do now after using the aforementioned EZ 100lb drywall anchors), which resulted in my drywall screws failing on one side deviated from the adjacent So, for those considering buying this: Buy the 100lb EZ Ancor drywall anchors I mentioned above and the flexible drill holder (using a drill is much easier for your forearms, and the drywall anchors at the top let you handle them with drills, just don't go crazy). For Fukumaru: Please change the design as recommended (size and position of screw holes/support beams) and add something like the drywall anchors mentioned above instead. It doesn't cost you much more and you have an almost perfect product considering the value for money. We apologize for the long review. It's just that I had so many headaches with the above issues that I had to write about them somewhere.
