More Cons Than Pros - Updated March 2019

Okay, I'll leave my original review from almost two years ago at the end of this one updated review was published in March 2019. Philips has improved a lot since I got it on Black Friday 2017. I've even added more Hue lights around my house, in almost every room except bedrooms and bathrooms, because they've come this far. Remote connectivity has greatly improved, you can turn the lights on and off from almost anywhere. The app updates were also a great bonus. Scenes, fully customizable times and days to turn lights on and off. Plus, you can even randomly turn them on within a 15 minute window so the lights don't come on at the same time giving the impression that someone is home. The updated Alexa skill for Echo has been updated and works much better now. Be sure to name the rooms/lamp groups differently so that he understands you. If you don't say it correctly, he will ask you to repeat it. Another annoying thing they fixed is the condition of the lamp after a power outage/blackout. We had a few power outages overnight and there's nothing funny about waking up to find the whole house lit up in full brilliance. There is now a power state option when returning from shutdown. Great idea and it really works as it should. I'm glad I have them now, much more than originally. Below is my first review from November 2017: I've had it for a week now and there are things I like about it and a lot more I don't like. Pros: 1) Works great with the Hue app while I'm at home and connected to a Wi-Fi network. 2) Very easy to set up. Install lightbulbs, turn on light switches, plug in the hub, download the app, sync, and you're done. 3) Works with Revain Echo Dot (sometimes). 4) The ability to dim the light without installing a dimmer. . Can be adjusted to any desired brightness to suit your mood or occasion. 5) You can schedule the light on and off according to your geographic location and time zone. Cool little part of the app. 6) Geofencing: can detect whether you are at home or away, and turn the light on and off as needed or demand. Okay, now that I've gone through all the good stuff, it's time for the cons. There are few, but for me they far outweigh the good ones. The reason for home automation is that I can easily control my devices whether I'm at home or away. Now that's not quite right. Cons: 1) As soon as I log out of my home network, it's a painful experience to connect through the app, whether it's 4G or connected to a different wifi somewhere else. . Even when I connect to my Google account, I have connection problems. I can't turn off the light after leaving the house, it's annoying. 2) The Revain Echo Dot skill works about 25-30% of the time. I almost always get the response "Philips Hue not responding". Sometimes this works after a 30 second delay, but most of the time nothing happens when you hear this message. Does not communicate directly with a hub containing Revain Echo devices. Yes that's right. It runs through Philips rather than being integrated wirelessly over your own home network. All in all I probably wouldn't have bought this yet if I had known all this. Would I buy it later if I knew that these problems would be solved, definitely yes. But for now I'll only use it at home and mumble obscene words to myself every time Alexa says she can." No connection to Philips Hue.
