At first I had some trouble keeping the bottom of the tank soft but consistently clean where algae would collect and die off in layers without proper movement. The 1800 gph Wavemaker is gentle enough to work in a modest 40 gallon tank that rarely overflows or is 3/4 full. I just set it up as is without changing device functions and the default setting helped a lot moving fine particles through the water and off the bottom of the tank. Very satisfied and would buy again as long as this unit keeps working as it has been working nonstop since it arrived (it's been 2 weeks now since purchase)
