Review on 🎧 Yamaha NS-SW050BL 8-Inch 100W Powered Subwoofer in Black for Enhanced Sound Experience by Carl Lipschultz

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great low-end home audio

Fully open; I'm Rebecca's father, not Rebecca. I ordered a Yamaha subwoofer to replace an aging passive subwoofer. Modern 5.1 systems are tuned for an active subwoofer and quite frankly they need one! Yamaha fits into the picture. It was priced right, including a 15ft cable to connect to the receiver and the ability to place the subwoofer in the right spot in the room for me. Results? Fiction. 8 inches doesn't sound like much, but the Yamaha produces an impressive sound. When I'm listening to music, it delivers that deep sound underlay that's hard to get from a standard speaker or an old-fashioned passive subwoofer that just can't get the volume it needs. In movies, it turned my sound into the feeling of a clattering chair. Once the speaker was set up, I gave it a good blackmail test - Star Wars, then Independence Day. the theatrical experience I was looking for. Some people asked if it was loud enough. Absolutely. The subwoofer itself has a volume control, which I leave at full volume so I can adjust the volume through the receiver using the remote. In most films, setting the B&W channel to just over 50% is fine; On some action movies like Independence Day, I had to turn it down to around 40% - high enough to feel the drone and low enough to hear the dialogue through the center channel. I'm sure there are better subs out there; just depends on what you think you need. The Yamaha subwoofer is perfect for me. For reference, my system is a Denon 5.1 receiver, 2 Bose 201 speakers for the front channel, and 3 Sony bookshelf speakers for the center and rear channels.

Pros
  • New rotated bell for clear, tight bass
Cons
  • Frequency

I ordered and paid the price of a 100W sub but received a 50W sub.
