Review on ARRIS SURFboard SBG8300: High-Speed Gigabit Cable Modem & Dual Band Wi-Fi Router, Cox/Spectrum/Xfinity Approved (Black) by Joe Lantz

the connection breaks down and the firmware is not updated

This combination of modem and WLAN is full of garbage. This is disappointing because I have an old Arris 6121 and it has been 100% reliable. My connection keeps dropping and the problem is I don't know if it's modem related or wireless router related. I've tried several WiFi configurations, but the connection still drops on all my devices at the same time. To make matters worse, the Arris website has a disclaimer that the FW/SW modem cannot be updated as it is managed by the service provider (comcast). Okay with that, but what about the Wi-Fi part? Are you telling me should I live with a Wi-Fi enabled FW/SW or wait for Comcast to update it remotely? No thank you. That was my first and last mistake when buying a combo modem and Wi-Fi router. The speeds were good. I have slow service from Comcast (150 Mbps) and my computers are old. But I was able to establish a fast (400Mbps) connection between a new PC connected to Arris via ethernet and my iphone8 using iperf3. Other connections are limited to either my Comcast connection or my old Macs.

Pros
  • Brings joy
Cons
  • Some little things
