Completely useless in a headless server

The included "driver" is a software driver, not a real driver in the usual sense. It is not present when the server boots and is not loaded until the logged-in user runs the program. useless on a headless server. but all this does not matter, since the device copes very poorly with its functions. after over a week of terrible tech support at startech.com. I found that my fax modem never works with this device. ended up buying from a competitor and had much more success! Avoid all startech.com…

Pros
  • Serial Over IP Device Server
Cons
  • Minor things

I'm running into three problems encountered with the software that supports this device. The most egregious (and why I'm bringing it back); The created virtual serial ports are hidden. You have to show hidden devices in Device Manager to see them, and worst of all, some programs don't detect their presence since they're marked as hidden. Second problem: I couldn't get DHCP to work, I configured it to use DHCP, it was assigned an IP address, but it either rebooted or did a factory reset. Issue…

Cons

Attention: Connections can only be made from Windows systems!

I bought it thinking it was a "normal" serial console server that I use with Unix's router and telnet (aka "reverse telnet") could connect to establish a connection to the serial port. Harbor. I should have read the manual before buying - it requires special Windows-only software to access it, which isn't very helpful to me. Since I don't have Windows, I'm sending it back.

Pros
  • DIN rail mount
Cons
  • There are new competitors

great for many uses but not all

This is a bit of a cumbersome setup compared to other devices I've tried, but I was able to get it to do what in this case I needed . There are things it doesn't do, but other units can do things you may not need. It's compact and reliable. That's a good value too.
