Review on πŸ“± RAM MOUNTS X-Grip Phone Holder with Handlebar U-Bolt Attachment by Justin Guldin

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Overall good except for one issue

I got this mount for a Harley to mount my Edge 7 smartphone. Installation is incredibly easy: mount U-bolts and bottom bracket around the handlebars, slide the top bracket onto the U -shaped screw, put on nuts and tighten. Did. Using the mount is easy: just bring the two grips on each side together, insert your phone and release. I had to make some adjustments to prevent the rubber tips of my hands from pressing the phone's power button, but that obviously depends on the device in question. The kit includes two U-bolts for different size bars, I used the larger version on a Harley. The phone's tension is good and firm, but I also use a rubber elastic device to grip the corners of the phone. I don't think the phone will slip out of the X-arches, but why take a chance on a $600 phone. A long weekend ride and the phone's position didn't move much, unfortunately even after having to navigate the inevitable gravel road all the mounting points stayed pretty much where I put them when the trip was over. I'll say one thing and this is where the device loses a star: The rubber temple tips slide in and out and Ram recommends using the included adhesive to attach them permanently, I don't know why Ram doesn't do this themselves. So here it is: DO NOT USE THE INCLUDED ADHESIVE. The mount comes with a small bottle of a version of super glue, throw it in the trash, don't even try to use it. I cut off the tip and carefully tried to squeeze out some glue, instead it spattered. and splashed on my hand and it was like acid; I don't know what Chinese factory makes this glue, but they have to include toxic waste in their recipe because it burns the skin. Use Loctite brand super glue instead or maybe even Elmers type white glue, the materials included are terrible and Ram should take care of that. I used a softer CA to attach the rubber tips and now they are in place.

Pros
  • Includes a U-bolt base that fits 0.5" to 1.25" diameter rails and a medium-length dual-socket B-size RAM arm; Ball joint technology allows for almost infinite adjustment
Cons
  • Cable is shorter than others
