Good mat cleaning and repair
Ever since I moved to Arizona from a wetter area, I've been getting charged with static electricity. As someone who tinkers with electronics on a regular basis, not having an anti-static mat would be unacceptable. So far I've handled a lot of electronic components on the mat and haven't damaged any, so I'd say it and my grounding strap are doing their job and protecting my devices.
