I've been using SMDV RFN-4s wireless remote triggers for a few years and really like them. Small, relatively cheap, very light and they "just work". I own two of these. and I would buy them again tomorrow if they were lost or stolen. The RFN-4 WORKS with the D850 BUT due to the D850's silent shooting mode in Mup (Mirror Lock Up) mode, the D850 will NOT let you press the shutter button when in Live View mode with the RFN -4s are located. Wait As long as you want the camera/tripod shake to dissipate, force the remote control to take the exposure by releasing the shutter button. The D850 takes the exposure immediately. For astrophotography I use a Tamron 150-600mm G2 Variable. This is a large, heavy lens and I often have to wait five or more seconds for the vibrations to dissipate after touching the camera/tripod. When you press the RFN-4s button for the first time, the D850 automatically takes the exposure without waiting for you to press the shutter button a second time to take the exposure. When using the camera's viewfinder, the RFN-4s works as it always has on various other Nikon cameras, which is a good thing because those remote releases are great. This is done by the camera, not the RFN-4. Those few who are interested in astrophotography can simply set their camera to Live View and Silent Shooting and use the RFN-4 to create an exposure. Because the shutter is stationary, you are not subjected to vibration as the image is captured electronically. Just make sure you wait long enough for the vibration to go away. Or set the focus and exposure in Live View, then put the camera in Through the Viewfinder mode and take the picture. It took a few hours of "trial and error" to figure it out, but the RFN-4s works flawlessly. with D850. It works a little 'different' than you might be used to if you've already had this product, but that seems to be the case with the D850's 'Silent Shooting' mode and not a 'faulty' RFN-4s lie. Hopefully this will save some people trouble.
