A known problem with the Original Equipment tailgate switch cover is that over time it turns into a mess that gets caught up in the inner workings of the switch, making it difficult (or impossible) to activate. .There are quite a few of these on the market, but this one comes with a handy scraper to clean up the mess from the switch. It's definitely worth searching online for a video showing how to remove the old cover and clean the switch. (I used white spirit). Some of these videos will tell you that to get to the switch you have to remove the plastic lining from the inside and remove any "decorations". It is not true! I have replaced the cover (and cleaned the switches) on two different 2004-2008 Prius Gen 2s on the outside by simply removing the two screws that hold the switch cover in place. It is very difficult to clean the old switch (took me about 45 minutes for each machine). You don't have to be an experienced mechanic to do this! The Toyota dealer wants a few hundred dollars to replace the entire switch and you can do it for the cost of this cheap item. My only complaint is that the replacement rubber switch cover is a bit flimsy and I wish it was thicker.
