I don't use magic erasers, although I tried one before ordering. Of these, I wanted to exclude the cleaner built into the magic eraser. So I got the cheap plain version too and wasn't impressed (it fell apart right away) but was intrigued enough to try this one. I like to cut these sponges into thirds or quarters. The idea is to dip the sponge in the water and then rub it on what you need. Dirt is rubbed off a little, then absorbed by the water and absorbed by the sponge due to capillary action. Squeeze out the water and repeat the process. The sponge really crumbles as you walk. I think that's just part of how this stuff behaves. I feel like I'm getting a lot of value out of a small piece. Without water, these sponges are too abrasive for my needs; water is required. A damp sponge is still slightly abrasive. If you're working on something delicate, you can remove part of the trim. However, they can (depending on your surface) be just as effective as a green sponge, but much less destructive. As if these sponges are more selective in what they remove. Or maybe the fine texture and melamine properties just make them effective enough to take away much of the harsh cleaning power. In any case they are perfect for what I bought them for as well as many other projects. An example of what they are great for is cleaning vintage leather (soiled by time and storage). I have also used them on various rubber materials such as sneaker soles. I know I remove some surface shine sometimes, but it's even and barely noticeable. And clean! I can't comment on how they fare for more common household uses, but these sponges are definitely great for just the right finish. I was very surprised that they are so helpful.
