Update addendum: Spontaneous shutdown continued when water is gone. Meanwhile, the seller offered a replacement or refund. Update: after 2 months it wouldn't turn off when the water ran out. The humidifier is easy to fill and clean. It gives off enough vapor for several hours. A drop or two of essential oil adds a pleasant aroma to my work day. (I have found that a second press of the power button, which is supposed to maintain vapor but turn off the light, does not turn off the light. The seller should not be held responsible for this as I was not interested in getting it fixed. I just thought I like the light quite a bit.)
