Simple handling and great colors pay off. As with most people, this can get messy, so be prepared. I lined my counter and bathroom floor with cut up garbage bags so I could clean up faster. Buy salon gloves (they're longer than regular gloves and feel better than thick rubber kitchen gloves), salon coats (because paint can seep through clothing), salon paint brushes (for applying paint), hair clips (for separating hair), disposable bowls, disposable -Plastic hairnet, petroleum jelly (to line face and neck before death, makes removing paint from skin easier) and non-silicone conditioner (any cheap brand, remember, the more conditioner, the more the color dilutes). The salon coloring brush was actually very helpful as its bristles are more abrasive and really cover every strand of hair, but I still tried to use my fingers, which makes flexible and snug-fitting gloves the most important for even coverage. As others have said, for maintenance: use a silicone/sulphate free shampoo/conditioner, use minimal shampoo, use cold water AND use gloves (mentioned above) when washing/conditioning your hair, this avoids staining your fingertips (and yes, wearing plastic gloves will make you uncomfortable in the shower lol).
