Review on πŸš— 4G OBD GPS Tracker with Spectrum Tracking: Speed Monitoring, GeoFence, Engine Diagnosis, Fuel Consumption for Families and Fleets by Chad Myers

It works, but not in the way I was hoping!

I ordered this unit last week. It arrived quickly. It was easy to install. However, the software is annoying! I am no longer a software developer. But the notifications on my mobile device seem to be missing information, showing a map of my community. The Spectrum app appears to refresh every 30 seconds, centering on the car icon whether you're actively sitting there or not, and scrolling through the map to look for a nearby location, like Google Maps. I'm a bit disappointed with my device choice. . I thought I had ordered a mobile hotspot for my kids. Apparently this is not the case. My other big problem is with the setup. it seems to generate random data for the first 24 hours. Not sure why. However, it is recorded that I drove 1224 miles at 33.? fuel, although in truth I haven't driven more than 12 miles. My city is but half a mile long and wide, and I am sure that the favor of its master has not traveled 1,224 miles in one day and returned home that same night. So the final conclusion is that the data is generated randomly. I suspect some of my data is not being properly recorded due to cellular signals and very little in my area despite having reliable service around town. We started by checking the connection. 30 second interval. We don't like that as it misses a lot in accurate position reports. It will map semi-chaotic patterns for you. If the ping interval is set to a shorter time, e.g. B. 15 seconds or less, most cards run smoother. I'm also a radio engineer and user of many technologies, so I use APRS for mapping. Both work the same but have some key differences, but in either case the cards should give the same results. Unfortunately, the spectrum tracker often skips turns or roads altogether, and therefore draws diagonal mapping lines across areas to connect ping points. It's not a problem for most, but it is for me. I've noticed that the device isn't logging RPM data from my 2003 F-150. Not sure why as this is definitely going to be sent to the OBD port. I didn't decipher the formula to find out the usefulness of other data. I don't know what 6500 means when looking at oil compared to 7100 the morning before. I don't know if they should be read as percentages or how. I'll have to ignore this data until I can sync an oil change to this device to find out. It reads Temp perfectly. However, I have concerns about how it calculates or determines the speed. On several occasions, the device recorded speeds of around 100 mph while cruising a 4-wheel trail. So question. Does this take the speed from the OBD connector (unlikely) or is it calculated based on cellular/GPS? If the latter is the case, any parents using this to stalk a teen should be concerned. This can lead to incorrect data. I also found hard braking and acceleration tracking to feel a bit off, but some of that really shows. I tend to be smooth most of the time while other devices are recording, but this device gave me hard braking and quick acceleration on a couple of occasions. again in a small town! General. I believe this block does what it was designed to do. It just doesn't meet my expectations and needs. In the next few days I will look around for a better device. I can try and check the updated version with hotspot. When my wife asked for Wi-Fi support, the response was certainly painful. It was just an instruction to follow the instructions on the box. Unfortunately, this person didn't bother to ask for a second what device I have and what problems I'm having. The end result was that I was ready to viciously smack this device with a 16 pound sledgehammer! My wife talked me out of it! He's still in the truck! I bought this device on May 8th, I received and installed it on May 10th, today is May 15th! 2021***Updated May 25, 2021*** The company contacted me shortly after I emailed the review above. I was offered to upgrade to the Wi-Fi model as planned. The company didn't have to do that. We also paid for the full replacement of the equipment including providing a shipping label. I installed the device last night after returning home. I will update my review later this week or early next. For now I say thank you Peter (think this is the contact I had, can't find the email in a second). He stretched out his hand and wanted to solve my problems. Until I review this updated module I won't understand a few things better. So stay tuned for more on that later. The ultimate goal of this experiment. I have an emergency and standby company, I also respond to multiple incidents, sometimes from my personal truck as it's faster to get to the crime scene than to go to the office. Customers come first! So. The experiment is that I initially live in a peripheral area of the federal state. Will this device track my personal truck reliably enough that I can confidently use it in a fleet? I understand cell signaling limitations. (I'm a former Ericsson Tower installer) Do factory modified engines with flashed ECUs matter and do they change dates? Does this unit read correctly for dual fuel engines? My truck runs on CNG or LPG/regular unleaded fuel. Here are some of the questions to start with. As for the Wi-Fi capabilities. I don't need much data bandwidth. However, within what range of the device does it work? I don't need video streaming, but maybe on rare occasions. In most cases it will be used for data processing, most likely laptop and tablet and a DD/DV wireless connection. What I really need to work through and decide is how the speed is calculated. It's about him picking me up driving at high speed, even though I know that's just impossible for this road. Definitely I will keep reviewing this product for a while and provide updates when I go. **UPDATE** May 31st. My wife gave me the tracker in two parts this morning. She found it in the detached OBD port. It looks like the fuselage just fell apart, but won't come back together. At the moment it was solved by wrapping it with black electrical tape. I believe the strength of the contact switches inside the case is part of the problem as they put a lot of force on the case at the disconnect point. The functionality does not seem to change when gluing the case with adhesive tape. I have NOT tried it, but I suspect that the device will not work with an open case, since that is the main purpose of such contact switches! However, I note that the device was still functional at the time the problem was discovered. I have photos of the device still plugged in and glowing like it's working. We have yet to get Wi-Fi working. It seems that finding the SSID in the list is a trick or a chore, it's up to you! In any case, we could not connect any device to the WLAN. WTF is the password? Can we see SMF? SSID, but unable to login. When I log in from the PC. It looks like this has allowed me to change the SSID and PW name, but the end result is that I have no idea how to login. I enlisted the help of friends at Google, but they are also at a loss. unit revolution. I don't consider it defective. I think it's the right SSID and PW! Let's redirect back to the PC side of the device for a moment. The software is clunky and not very user friendly. If you just want to look at a map and see where the device was great, it works in hindsight, but not great for real-time tracking when I'm in the office. I suspect it's the ping interval which I set to 30 seconds. In a small town, 30 seconds is almost the length of a town, so it doesn't show the route used very well, it just gives me dots on the map. That's why all our trucks also have their own GPS device so they can also record driving data like speed and the current map that I can see turn-by-turn directions. I've gotten to a point with this device that after 25 days of review. If I could return it in parts I would, I would be very happy to return the junk ordered! However, my professional feelings are there and I only suggest that people stay away from this device until the featured software is rebuilt and usable by the average technical user. Unfortunately, this tech user has met a worthy opponent! This device is NOT user friendly and the support was severely lacking. I will try again today to contact the company again and see what new information they can give me to use this tracker for work and benefit. I really think this block can do the job I need. I think the company wants it to work. I also think they are trying to help. However, until he earns at least, it's just a waste of time and money.
