I bought this counter for two reasons: to test wood before burning and to test wood for my furniture making hobby. In one it is excellent and in another it seems useless. When testing wood for furniture or other valuable wood products, this little gauge shines. It seems very precise, well built and very sturdy. Two sets of pins allow accurate inspection of most wood species. The only (minor) downside here is the need to use the included cheat sheet to adapt to different types of wood, which is easy to do. Forget about testing your firewood unless you store your firewood in an air-conditioned room. The first problem is the temperature correction. I don't know about others, but I burn most of the wood when it's really cold (below freezing) outside. This meter cannot compensate for such low temperatures. The second problem is related to the tendency of wood stored outdoors to absorb moisture in the end fibres. I was able to solve this problem by cutting samples in half just before testing, but I still had to put them in and warm them to room temperature before testing. I burn 7-8 logs in my whole house wood stove each season so it's just not practical and I don't want to store my firewood inside (I haven't had to test this gauge on concrete or anything yet). Building materials, so my review doesn't cover that feature.) Conclusion: This well-built counter is worth the money (it's actually a good deal!) for woodworking or similar uses. If anyone has any tips for using it with firewood, I'd love to hear your suggestions!
