Size 2XL fits waist 42, pockets just right.
I wear jeans with a 42" waist and am 5'10". Waist fits 2xl. However, they are a bit short which makes some machines uncomfortable to use, but I just wear compression shorts underneath. People have complained about the pockets but they are ok. I have a Galaxy Note 8 which is a very large phone and fits in my pocket. The pocket can roll up and slide out a bit, but both of these things happen to most athletic shorts due to the material and loose fit.
