In this discussion I will focus on whether and how this product is suitable for listening to audio books. The fact is it fits. Most importantly, it stays where you left off as long as you leave the battery in place (and charged, I suppose). First let's understand what this idea is not. It is not a complex audio book device like the various Sandisc MP3 players and other similar brands of audio book players on the market. I actually have a Sandisc player and it's really quite complex. It also has certain disadvantages which is why I bought this Retekiss device in the first place. More on that later. Unlike more complex players, Retekess can't read directories, so you can't have multiple books on the device and switch back and forth, each with its own bookmark. This device does not work that way. Instead, it reads from the root of your flash drive and plays the download portions of the book in order. You can pause it or turn it off and it will play from where you left off as long as the battery isn't drained to the point where it won't fully function. So why, you ask, if I already own more sophisticated MP3 audio book players, did I use or buy this device? The answer is that it has physical buttons and built-in speakers. This button functionality means you can play the device in the dark by feeling the buttons, meaning you don't have to see what you're doing. Great for late night listening in bed or in a dark car while someone else is driving, or even when you're driving yourself. You don't have to take your eyes off the road to stop and restart it. The second great feature that makes this device useful is that unlike Sansdisk, you don't need earphones or headphones. You also don't have to install a speaker and connect it to an MP3 player in every room you work in. If you want to connect speakers in any room, you can certainly connect this unit to a speaker via a standard mini jack, like you can with a Sandisk turntable. The thing is, though, if you just want to do household chores in multiple rooms and listen to an audiobook while you work, you don't have to face this problem. In such a case, you can simply take this device with you and carry it from room to room. It has built-in speakers. You can listen to an audio book while doing the dishes, then pick it up and take it to the garden while weeding your tomato plants, or to the sewing machine to work on your projects in the workshop. where do you have a sewing machine No matter where you go or what you need to do, you just pick it up and take it with you - all without the hassle of headphones. I find it very annoying having to leave my headphones in place all the time when going from room to room. After a while they really bother me. I prefer to grab a small device, press the play button and listen to books through the built-in speakers. Finally, I love ripping audiobooks straight to a flash drive and then plugging them into Retekess, which is awesome. . Most competing players do not match flash drives. Most people use tiny cards, but I'm not going to mess around with these tiny cards, which are a huge hassle for me anyway. I also don't like the hassle of uploading books directly to Sandisk. Some of the more sophisticated players can be pretty finicky about how you set them up to appear as a disc on your hard drive. Sometimes you need to overcome some obstacles to make your computer recognize the MP3 player and then download the books. However, with this device, you just plug the flash drive into your computer, then transfer the audiobook MP3 files and plug the flash drive into this MP3 player. Can you listen to audio books? Not so easy. It's possible, but you'll need to convert the audio files to MP3 files first, which is doable but requires special software. Also, I don't know if converting sound files to mp3 - even for personal use - violates the user license agreement. I have no idea because such documents are rarely read cover to cover. I certainly don't. I'm assuming Audible won't let you use the software to convert your files, even for personal use. You can absolutely legally burn audio files onto a CD using the software provided by Audible, in which case these files must be in mp3 format. It was possible to transfer them from a CD to a flash drive, but again, I can't comment on whether that violates a license agreement. I have no idea. It's not something that I stay up at night thinking about her. All in all I love this thing for listening to audio books as I move from room to room doing house and garden chores. I will also note that when I listen to audiobooks online while working at my desk, I prefer to listen online or in desktop software. I like Angel Vox. In this case, I often have multiple books loaded and switch between them as I work. At the end of the day, for the little money the seller is asking for this product, you really have nothing to lose. It fits the niche.
