The sponge was heavily loaded the first time I used it and when I applied it was more on the scalp than the hair. After slightly moistening the excess and applying it to the middle root first, it glided on nicely. My hair is very gray so the finish wasn't as black as I thought it would be but definitely masked the gray roots. My hair wasn't sticky either and I was able to apply it to my hair after towel drying it, unlike other products that require your hair to be dry to apply.
