I use this 2 times a month on my 60 gallons. I use it when I fill up the tank every other Saturday, a week before a 25% water change. If you add it and get chunks it's fine, I've done this before. My fish see it and think it's food. I've been using this product for a while and it doesn't harm my fish. Tip: This product will be rough if not shaken well. So I just take a jar, fill it halfway with aquarium water and add the right dose for my aquarium size. Then I stir for about 3 minutes.
