Review on Givi OBKN42BA 42Ltr OUTBACK Monokey Top Case in black by James Mcphearson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Not the product in the photo! But close.

First of all I would like to point out that the only picture for this product is an older OBK42, not an OBKN42. I'm assuming the 'N' stands for 'new' (or whatever it's called in Italian) and the new version has redesigned brackets. You may think that this is a small difference, but some accessories, including the back cushions, are shaped differently to fit different mounting versions and will only fit the version they were designed for. If you suddenly want to order a suitcase and blanket at the same time, you are in for an expensive surprise! The luggage itself is great. First class fit and finish. Love the fact that it almost matches the look of the BMW R1200GS Adventure cases. except that the mounts on the older OBK42 (which I thought I ordered based on the only photo available) were much closer to production BMWs than the OBKN42 (which I got). Internal capacity is great for a 2xl full face helmet and a few other random items. I installed my case on an AltRider truck bed with the AltRider monokey kit installed. When the rubber bumpers are positioned correctly, the case fits snugly without sagging that would otherwise cause vibration or rattling. Just in case you're wondering which adapter you need for this case, the answer is none. Givi makes a range of bike mounting plates for the Monokey, it also makes universal plates that may require some creativity and creativity to fit any specific bike. AltRider and possibly some other third parties also make monokey adapters. Based on my experience with AltRider, I can definitely give my approval for the Monokey kit. While testing this case I may come back and update the review. I've read many reviews on Givi tank bags that point to systemic issues with zippers, but as this case has no zippers I don't see that as a problem!

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not everything fits
