Potential but not fit for purpose

I had a leak and while I was fixing it I came across Moen Flo. I bought it and signed up for a $5 monthly fee which was supposed to provide more details on water usage and make "concierge" available. A little over a month and he has the potential to achieve his intended goal but falls short of what was intended. The purpose is to prevent damage from water leaks. Here are some pros and cons: PROS: Detects water pressure, which is invaluable information. CONS: Can't do anything about it. Since mine was too high, I had to put in a pressure reducing valve to protect my house. PRO: Every night he closes the valve and checks the line for leaks. CONS: If someone uses the bathroom or turns on the water by spinning the test, they will detect a leak. PRO: It monitors excessive water consumption and notifies you. CONS: It takes 5 minutes to notify you and 15 minutes before he shuts off the water. That's a lot of water damage if it's a real leak. CONS: It doesn't have leak detectors. He just watches how long the water flows. You can get a third party leak detector and turn off the water manually when it tells you there is a leak or automate it, but it only works with Smart Things and ONLY works on the web. CONS: Can't tell the difference between legitimate and good water usage. I've proposed a sensor on a home's sewer to determine if water is flowing down the drain, signaling legitimate use, but nothing has been developed. PRO: There is a good application for monitoring usage and notifying about problems. CONS: Some features require a $5 per month app fee to see how much water the devices are using. CONS: We had a device that turned off the water during multiple family showers in a row. Soaping up and turning off the water is no fun. We didn't hear the notification that the water was going to be turned off because we were in the shower. CONS: I suggested developing a drain sensor to avoid power outages due to legitimate use. At first they were open to the idea, but when I asked for an API or a way to access the device, they stopped responding to my emails. I have sent a few and they no longer reply to my emails even though I pay for the "concierge" service. CONS: Sensor error - I had a "flood user" alert and a countdown to close the valve and cancel the alert. After disconnecting the water pressure sensor started to rise and reached 170+ psi when the normal reading is around 50-75psi. I closed the valve and opened it, but there was no change. I set the pressure regulator to 50psi and tested this unit. It showed 50psi on the analog gauge. I turned on the water and everything was back to normal. I went through my logs and the same thing happened multiple times. I cannot recommend this product if the manufacturer stops responding to polite, respectful comments about improving their product. You need to open the product's API so that it can be controlled locally with sensors without requiring the internet. The home automation community will actively and significantly improve the utility of their product.
