I tried connecting external speakers to my computer through the monitor but they kept humming loudly. I tried several different cables and also tried different configurations for the power plug but nothing worked. Then I looked online and one of the suggestions was to make sure you are using shielded cable. This one from Mediabridge had "Top Quality Double Shielding" in the description so I thought it might be worth a try. It worked! After connecting my speakers to this cable the hum was gone and now they are completely silent, as far as any background noise. This cable is exactly what I needed. completely solved my problem.
