Don't know why it works; I would really like to understand the principle, but I don't understand it. I've found that I have to add 1/2 to 3/4 cup of pure white vinegar to the water to keep the clothes smelling fresh, and set the washing machine to prewash to give the clothes enough soaking time. They don't remove stains, so my Oxy-clean is always on hand. The pre-treated chocolate and blood are gone. Dirt and grime disappeared without pre-treatment. This is a godsend for people with sensitive skin. When I used the detergent, I had to rinse twice. The pre-wash is much easier and I no longer have a rash. Yes!
