Functionality Problems with clarity 54005 old for the severely disabled

My sister and I bought this phone for our 93-year-old father who is in a nursing home. He has poor hearing, even with a hearing aid, poor eyesight, and cannot hold his phone for more than a few seconds. My sister and I tested it and found the following: 1. The basic volume and gain function works very well and improves call clarity2. The speakerphone was very distorted and didn't have any of the clarity fixes that a regular phone had3. It was very easy to accidentally turn on the speakerphone as the range to get into is very large. If my sister and I accidentally kept doing it, my dad would do it all the time. It was impossible to find a headset for a wired phone. We tried the Plantronics M175C as a WIRELESS phone. It was useless - the volume of the headset dominated the volume of the phone with the amplifier. NOW: We just ordered a Clarity XLC3.4 boosted cordless phone. We'll try next week with and without the headset. Hopefully this works better and our father can hear us on the phone. ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATION: For severely limited users, find a site where you can download the user guide for any phone you are considering and study it carefully to see if it's likely to work.
