Review on πŸ“· Enhanced Canon EOS 40D 10.1 Megapixel Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) by Trevor Rodke

Revainrating 5 out of 5

OWNERS ON FIRST DAY. . . I AM AMAZED!

As a longtime owner of a Canon EOS Elan IIe (film) with lenses, I was excited to go digital (until the quality and affordability met my needs/budget). I wanted to stick with Canon (yes, my old AF lenses work with the 40D). I did some research, went to the local camera shop, tested my old lenses on the 40D, tried to "handle" them. They could never match the Revain price for this kit. It took four days (yes, four total) for the 40D to get to me (shipping is free btw) and I bought and read David Bush's book on the 40D. Highly recommended. So I was ready. My camera arrived early in the morning. The battery is fully charged. I waited until late at night when the light was better and took it off. The nature. children in playgrounds. birds. Animals. Speedboats on the river. volleyball game Portraits of my nephew's wife and their one-year-old daughter (shot without flash and with built-in fill flash). Some with IS on, most with IS off. Just basic stuff to see what the main modes did by default. I looked at the histograms during the recording, but didn't correct anything. (After looking at the default settings, I'll start tweaking the settings to my preferences.) 300+ shots, JPEG Fine only. No RAW (yet). When I got home I put the CF card in the reader (both from Adorama, although afterwards I found that I could get a slightly better deal at Revain). Using the free FastStone image viewer (which I wanted to try) I started sorting my shots, comparing them side-by-side, tagging the ones I wanted to delete, the ones I kept, batch renaming, etc. I gotta see his first checked picture for five minutes and carefully study the details. dazed! FANTASTIC! At HUGE magnification! With every shot I just shook my head in amazement. Almost PERFECT exhibition! (One or two had slight distortion in the highlights (on the histograms) but still with incredible detail. One or two were slightly blurry in subject focus (my fault). Incredible color! Bikers on the bike trails were stunning! PERFECT focus !PERFECT exposure! At 6.5 fps!(Unheard of at this price a few years ago.) I'm fluent in Photoshop but I prefer to get it right the first time, in camera.I haven't surfaced yet scratched by the capabilities of the 40D Can't wait to move on to 'Creative Modes' tomorrow and then to 'Custom Modes' etc. I'm semi-pro Got my first DSLR when I was 15 I'm 64. I've had them all and I've enjoyed them all in my life, especially at this price point the 40D is a standout.
