Review on πŸ’» MiniStation Extreme Portable HD PZN2 0U3B by Buffalo by Jesus Cordova

Good product but poorly designed software and documentation

Overall the device itself is nice and works as expected once you set it up. I've purchased three versions of Buffalo Encrypted Drives over the past few years. All of them, including this one, have poor documentation and the program's user interface isn't very good. This is particularly bad for third-party encryption software, password settings, or NFC devices - it's just not intuitive, especially if you're trying to change something after the initial setup. As an example, I tried the automatic password feature - it automatically logs you into a drive on the selected PC. Unfortunately, once this is configured, there is no option to go back to ANY menu to disable this feature on the PC, so now I can't get to the configuration menu at all to make any changes. I suspect I need to change the password on a separate PC before I can get to the menu. Although NFC is the technology used to unlock a device, many (if not most) NFC-enabled cell phones don't work with it to unlock it, which is a shame as using the phone is certainly better than carrying one separate card with. It would be nice if they provided a list of compatible phones, but of course that would require documentation, which isn't Buffalo's forte. However I have bought 3 similar units from Buffalo so the good clearly outweigh the bad but just don't buy this expecting a polished user interface or meaningful documentation.
