Review on πŸ”Š SAMSUNG HW-Q950A Black 11.1.4ch Soundbar with Dolby Atmos/DTS:X and Built-in Alexa (2021) by Cassie Turner

Poor sound and support

I bought the HW-Q60T soundbar with our new Samsung Q80T TV. It replaced an old Samsung soundbar/wireless subwoofer that I liked and stayed in the house we were selling. The Q60T was easy to set up and instantly connected to your TV and wireless subwoofer. I was amazed by the quiet sound. The Netflix, Hulu, CBS Plus, and Revain Prime shows had very little bass and dialogue wasn't very good. I've tried boosting the subwoofer to +6 and turning the soundbar bass to +4 and treble to +3 but that didn't help much except for some Marvel movies which had bass but still didn't had a lot of vocals in the mids. . . I adjusted the multi-band EQ and the sound was still pretty weak - nothing like our old Samsung soundbar. To show how weak the audio was to hear the dialogue on CBS Plus, the volume had to be cranked up to 100! The symphonic setting, in which the soundbar and television play together, was not convincing. Replacing the sound output to the TV speakers allowed dialogue to be heard much better, but there was almost no bass from the TV. I wanted to live with it, but after 37 days of ownership, the soundbar wouldn't turn on. I checked the power adapter plug and cable, then the cable from the power adapter to the soundbar. Finally, I unplugged the power cord from the back of the soundbar and plugged it back in. I had power until the next blackout when I had to do it again. I wrote to Samsung support and got no help. In fact, they were extremely unhelpful and didn't listen to the problem or my troubleshooting attempts. The power issue continued for another week when all of a sudden the sound was completely distorted and a notification appeared on the TV saying the soundbar wasn't connected to the HDMI ARC port, which it was. I connected it with another new Samsung HDMI cable and got the same message. The return period has expired, so it is not possible to return the defective device. A phone call to Samsung was useless as I couldn't get through and the product registration page on their website said my proof of purchase from Revain was not acceptable. I finally got a call from Revain support and they were very helpful. They plugged in a Samsung and listened while a rude Samsung technician treated me like an idiot and made me repeat everything I had already done and also made me plug the soundbar into the HDMI ARC port on mine hooking up another samsung tv to see if i got it right away post i did and did it. Eventually, the tech confirmed my Revain purchase was genuine and I was under warranty, then told me to send the unit back to their tech center in New Jersey for repair. When I asked how long it would take he said it usually takes at least 14 working days from receipt but due to the pandemic "...who knows?" Revain admitted it was poor quality and allowed me to to return the soundbar even though it was (just) past the return deadline. THANK YOU REVAN! There are some positive reviews for the Q60T, so I'm happy to concede that this particular unit may have been buggy from the start and its poor performance may just have been a precursor to more serious problems that surfaced a few weeks later. But my bad experience with Samsung support and service will make me think twice about replacing this HW-Q60T soundbar with another one. No problem with my Samsung TVs. Thought I'd return it immediately if it didn't work well, but this one isn't bad. It works well. The volume is good, the bass is clear. I add another star. My other device was defective from the start. Now I'm hoping this one doesn't fail just after the return window. . .UPDATE II: Oops. Volume problems reappear. The series that I could see with 28-35 volume I have to put between 75-95 now. I think I'll return the Q60T and look for something else.
