I only bought this for the headset jack, I won't be using buttons or anything. I always kept it on my shelf where it couldn't be damaged and used a reasonable length cord for party talk. Well after a month he decided to make strange noises that made it impossible to use him with party chat, even the other end of the party couldn't stand the noises. I've also tried different micro USB cables and tried all the USB ports on the Xbox to see if that was the problem and it didn't solve it at all. He thinks he has a faulty audio encoding/decoding chip. All I know is that I received a defective controller.
