Review on πŸŽ’ Osprey Farpoint Travel Backpack: Essential Daypack for Casual Adventures by Herthoel Yanda

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great backpack but is missing a few key features (maybe Osprey will see this)

I've been a long time Osprey fan and have traveled the world on my Talon 44. I love my Talon because of its light weight. the backpack is there, and 44 liters force me to pack only what i really need for the whole trip. I don't like checking bags on flights, except maybe on the way back when I want to lighten my load of all the treasures I found en route. With my old airline travel gear I had foldable bags for 2 things: the day pack and the aforementioned retrieval bag. I also carry a collapsible water bottle which works really well while you are somewhere to fill up. There were two main reasons I "upgraded" to this farpoint 55 configured for air travel: the luggage style that opens for loading (vs. my Talon's top loading) and the optional daypack that snaps open. I've always used the front chest pocket for my important personal items and it would be great to be able to lock them in as the shoulder straps tend to ride down when you're really moving and bumping around (I don't have very wide ones Shoulders). ). Getting in the trunk cargo is a huge plus. Trying to rummage through a top-loading bag a few times a day becomes a daily repack when you travel to new places frequently. The luggage style allows you to see everything without having to move everything. Being able to remove the straps is great. On smaller flights I had to check my Talon 44 a few times. I had a science in how to tie all the straps together to attach them to the straps. However, my plastic clip broke off and I suspect it caught on my belt somewhere along the way. If you've never owned an Osprey, they offer the most amazing guarantee. If something breaks, breaks, breaks, they fix it for free. If they can't fix it, they'll replace it for you for free. This applies to all their backpacks, regardless of their size or age. Make sure you try them on before committing to them. Be sure to add weight to see where the backpack is. Consider where you will be walking, will it be hilly, lots of stairs, just from the airport to the hotel or by plane, miles of walking. My friends and I feel that Ozone Duplex and Porter are not appropriate for the weight. They are wider than they are long, and the mid-back gets a lot more stress than the farpoint. The farpoint is long enough to distribute weight more evenly across the shoulders, mid-back, and lower back. I felt a bit more drunk with wider backpacks and when climbing stairs or in hilly areas which could be a problem. Now for a few things I wish Osprey would consider adding to the Farpoint to make it even better: The daypack is really great with soft microfleece lining for your electronic protection. The bag offers enough space for the day. However, I would like more dedicated loops for adding carabiners. I want to buckle things I don't want to keep and open my bag, especially when I'm on a hike. I would like some loops on the back and straps. The 2 water bottle holders, which are located entirely on the back of the bag, are a bit annoying. I can't easily reach them without removing my backpack. I know the older Farpoint 55 had a headphone hole on the top of the bag that people used for a makeshift water bladder hose. Why isn't there a thin waterproof section for the water bladder and a hole for the hose at the top? Most of the people who buy this travel light and enjoy the great outdoors when traveling, whether it's for business or pleasure. Osprey, a travel company, missed out on backpacking that day in a few big but simple ways. I have the same request regarding the 40 liter part of the bag, give us more straps. Sure I can use the straps, but now I'm pushing more on parts that aren't specifically designed for use in the carry loops. There are 4 special loop points on the back, give us a few on the front and some small zippered sections on the hip pads for small items like chewing gum, lip balm, a few bucks. The only other wish is that there are more color options. I love my lemon yellow talon because it's easy to spot in a crowd. Red and especially black are two colors that are so common that when you check your bag you will find it a little harder to see your bag compared to all the other bags. I will add some colored locks or carabiners to my bag to make mine stand out.

Pros
  • Great construction
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
