What is the purpose of this product?

I bought this item to replace my old one. It is written that it is waterproof and protects against dust mites. It's not even buttoned. What's the meaning of this? It's 2012 and bed bugs are rampant. How does that protect against everything useful. The descriptions are too vague and don't mention if there is a zipper anyway. I still can't understand the purpose of a zipless bedspread. I just can't :( Very disappointed!
