It was what I expected from the photos. I found that the front part is easy to do yourself with the help of a mirror. But I would definitely recommend back brace. You should twist a section of hair on top of your head, and for best results, twist it fully and wrap it around spiral rods. I used them for perms and they got slippery and fell off. I'd like another "clip" or whatever you need to see to hold them in place because the little ones that come with the kit won't do until you try to remove them on purpose , then good luck! Pooh! But I still say buy them. They are good for the price and can be used for general style. Just keep your hands behind the back of your head otherwise the tangles will be redundant! Be creative, I used little black rubber bands on the ends. I would use clamps to hold the bars in place, but the perm said not to touch any metal surfaces. I have my curls though!
