These things are empty so quickly, we almost never print on a home office printer and cartridges have to be replaced all the time. Instead of letting it print, even if a cartridge type might be low on magenta (let's say it's low on magenta and you only wanted to print a black and white document), it won't print, it will still refuse to print! I consider such tactics to be minor and cannot blame those who use non-genuine cartridges or injectable refills. I'll probably still use HP cartridges for convenience, but it's expensive.
