They said it was for flakes, but even small flakes like coconut kernels don't fall out of the hole they made in the top of the lid to spill. All we have to do is remove the full lid to pour in the flakes. I would also like to warn you about the size. They're short, that's one of the reasons I ordered them. I was going to put our cereal in the kitchen drawer, but the cereal containers are so small that even a small packet of cereal wouldn't fit in the container. You still have a small potion in the bags that you then have to deal with. They come with a black chalkboard sticker that you can put anywhere on the container, but the chalk pen they send is navy blue which doesn't show up well on black. It stays good; Actually I had to take a damp paper towel to wipe it off to change the name. Unfortunately this leaves a faint copy of the word on the sticker so I know it won't do any good in the long run. Hope that helps!
