I built my own augmented reality gun. In order to legally leave it to my heirs after my death, I had to label it with my name as the manufacturer, my city, state, country, and serial number. I checked the laser engraving but they charged $120 and three days of labor to mark my bottom of the receiver. Then I thought to just stamp it. The law requires such markings to be at least 1/16 inch high and 0.003 inch deep. These stamps certainly exceed the minimum height. I called Tekton and spoke to a very helpful person. He suggested that these dies should have no problem punching the required .003 inch depth out of hardened 6061 aluminum. He suggested using a heavy hammer for best results, not a steel hammer. He also suggested that instead of hitting the hammer hard like you would hammer in a nail, he said that I would get better results if I lifted the hammer a certain distance (determined by experiment and practice) and then the Hammerhead would drop on the nail. Stamp so you could apply consistent pressure to the ram over and over again versus varying depths as you could never apply consistent pressure with a regular hammer blow. It made sense. So I ordered a 32 ounce set of these brands and the Tekton brand. Brass Hammer http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NPUK66/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I also ordered a steel bench block from Revain http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058EDU8M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. He also advised getting a straight embossing line by clipping a metal ruler, such as a metal ruler, to the work surface as a guide. I didn't have a similar piece of 6061 aluminum to practice with, so I just had to jump in and start stamping. I couldn't find a suitable ruler due to the shape and size of the bottom AR receiver, so I used the edge of the store itself as a guide. To avoid crushing my magazine well, I inserted a bottom vise block into the magazine to fill most of the space and filled the tiny remaining gap between it and the well with a business card. The bench block was wrapped in plastic so I left the plastic on the steel block with the idea that this would help not scratch the aluminum. I placed a steel bench block on my workbench and placed the area of the lower receiver that I wanted to stamp on it. I started stamping and it took a few hammer hits before the letters were deep enough to reach the minimum depth. When I was done all my letters and numbers were in place and at the right depth. The biggest problem I had was aligning my stamps. As I went along I got better at it, so the end result was that the first few letters were a little crooked, but the ones at the end were pretty straight and well spaced. Is my stamp perfect? no Am I happy with that? Yes. It meets the legal requirements I needed and since I put the stamp in a place that isn't immediately visible unless you look for it, it looks good. If I had to do it again, I'm sure I could do better. Of course it's not as perfect as laser engraving, but it's a lot cheaper and I was able to do it at home in about an hour. I showed it to a few gun owners I know and while they admitted it wasn't perfect, they both remarked that it didn't look as bad as some of the stamps they saw from major gun manufacturers. done now, and when I die I can legally pass it on to my heirs. Also, I now have a nice set of dies, a nice new brass hammer, and a jewelry workbench block for future projects. I'm happy! I would like to express my deepest thanks to Tekton's excellent customer service staff for their advice!
