Kitty jumped at it the minute we put it together. It has a rug/pad like bottom layer and then a regular sisal wrapped top and a small dangling ball of fur for him to slap on. The solid wooden base has several small beads. The cat showed no interest in the butt, but the top drove him crazy. Cats who like to scratch furniture may be attracted to double scratch pads. Always remember that just because it's worn out doesn't mean it needs to be replaced unless it's worn out. Cats love to scratch a worn scratching post. I think this one will hold up pretty well and we'll be using it for a couple of years.
