Review on XPEL Extra Wide Door Guard by Will Porter

Revainrating 4 out of 5

6 months and getting stronger (higher)

This edge protector is a fairly thick transparent tape that sticks to the edge of your door to protect it from damage. I had no intention of banging my door on anything but I've had this product for 6 months and it's held up well so far. All of this disappears after installation and holds like crazy. I chose to install it wet as there is a little more time for positioning and air bubbles to escape. After about a day the moisture will have evaporated and it will hold just as it would if it was laid dry. If you can't apply tape without ruining it, don't buy it. This is a great product but you must read the instructions, follow them and take your time. If done carefully, you can get a professional looking rig for a low price. If you're not the patient and easygoing type, find a friend who is. Buy them a beer and then give them a pair of scissors and a spray bottle. Maybe not in that particular order. October 2011 Update: Some people have commented that this material is not very durable. I'm beginning to agree with that, but also don't know what else this product could really replace. I've since replaced my original setup as the "pointy" part on the edge of my door was completely worn out. I open doors very carefully, but I have a two-door car (long doors). When I park in your typical California "compact" space, there isn't much room to open the door. I often have to touch the next car with my door. This slight stress caused the material to wear out after a few months of use. For this reason I downgraded my rating to 4/5 stars. Removing the old product was easy and it came out clean. I have since redone both edges of the doors with a new strip of material. I also added a 2nd layer over where I was having wear issues. Overall I think it's still a good product but it's not bulletproof. Update July 2014: We just rebuilt our 2-door as the material was a little worn after a few years. After over 2 years in the California sun it got pretty clean. A quick wipe with alcohol will remove any residue. It took about 15 minutes and I started applying the product dry. I start from the outside of the door. Once glued I massage the material around the edge and inside the door. Looks great.
