Puzzle Making Revisited

My son went to DC last spring in the 5th grade and loved the city. Therefore, he was very happy to receive this puzzle as a gift. My husband, son and I worked on this together for 3 or 4 days and while I wouldn't say it's an 'easy' puzzle, it was a fun time together. The pieces are made from thick foam, and instead of gluing the pieces together (because the pieces themselves are almost entirely made up of just two different shapes), they're made from a printed map so you know where to put the pieces. What we did is create the first layer just above the map. I think it made it a lot easier than trying to look back and forth at the map and the puzzle. After the first layer is finished, one is surprised to find that one now has to start from scratch, because the second layer is almost an exact superimposition of the first layer, except that there is no part of the water in it (because the water should appear recessed) . - and holes for plastic cases. It's frustrating at first, but it gets a little easier in the end because you've already seen how to do it. Once the second layer of foam is applied, the reward will be the pleasure of placing all the buildings in their correct places. I wouldn't recommend this puzzle for young children, but maybe 9 or 10+. One thing to note that I didn't notice in any of the instructions is that the puzzle pieces are packed in individual bags inside the box. Do not open all parts at once! A whole bag is the base layer and it becomes extremely difficult when the second bag is mixed with pieces. These packets aren't labeled to open them first - you'll need to open the one with lots of blue water pieces. I hope our experience will help you. We had fun and hope you did too!
