When we first turned on these headlights in our trailer we were disappointed. The light, I heard, was "dirty" - bright patches of yellowish light surrounded by strange circular shadows. We found that this effect is inherent in the nature of light: six LEDs shine like small spotlights through the transparent part of the lens cap, creating an uneven light. If I had rated the lamps as originally installed I would give them 2.5 stars. I figured if I could diffuse the light somehow, the bright spots and shadows would go away. That's exactly what happened. I sprayed the inside of the lens of the first lantern with icing spray I had left over from another project. For the next light I just rubbed the clear part of the lens with a steel wool. Both techniques worked to create a nice even light. The light color is pleasant, slightly warmer than fluorescent tubes and slightly colder than conventional light bulbs. It also seems brighter than the old lanterns and ultimately casts fewer shadows. Installation required drilling new holes and carefully placing a jig to hide the old holes, but that's probably not surprising for a trailer that's over 20 years old. The rest of the installation is pretty quick and easy. The lens cap is a little tricky to remove (slide forward and gently remove), but given the 10-year lifespan of the LEDs, that shouldn't be a problem. If you don't mind a little DIY, I would definitely recommend this. bright. If you don't mind weird shadows, they can be used as is.
